The health and fitness industry now boasts nearly 7000 gyms across the UK, a figure that continues to rise year on year. That means that outside of work, employees are more conscious of their physical fitness than ever. But what are employers doing to ensure that employee health is safeguarded during the 9-5? One simple method of counteracting the pitfalls of a sedentary lifestyle and potentially improving worker performance, is the promotion of deskercise – movement carried out in and around an employee’s workspace. Whilst this won’t totally negate the impact of 8 hours spent perching on your derriere, it’s a step in the right direction. Try recommending the following:
Seated spinal stretches
These can be performed subtly and fuss free, without the whole office wondering what Janet from accounts is up to. From a seated position, with feet at 90’ to hips, slide your right hand down your right shin. From here, with your stomach braced, gently rotate externally from the left shoulder. You should feel your chest open and some light pressure in your lower back. Ultimately, you’d like your left arm skywards to run parallel with your right arm on the shin, but be sure not to force the move.
