The health and fitness industry now boasts nearly 7000 gyms across the UK, a figure that continues to rise year on year. That means that outside of work, employees are more conscious of their physical fitness than ever. But what are employers doing to ensure that employee health is safeguarded during the 9-5? One simple method of counteracting the pitfalls of a sedentary lifestyle and potentially improving worker performance, is the promotion of deskercise – movement carried out in and around an employee’s workspace. Whilst this won’t totally negate the impact of 8 hours spent perching on your derriere, it’s a step in the right direction. Try recommending the following:
Leaving the desk at least once per hour
In a study from the International Journal of Behavioural Nutrition and Physical Activity, participants in an experiment about the impact of seated working practices reported feeling most energetic when carrying out small bouts of frequent moment. This equates to roughly 2-5 minutes per hour. That’s a regular loo break, or a watercooler chat. The upturn in energy is something employers should be actively promoting amongst their workforce.
